I think I was in 5th grade when I heard LL Cool J's, I Can't Live Without My Radio, for the first time. This kat, Derek... Yeah Derek! (We called him D-Man.) One could never forget such a silky-smooth, dark- Wesley Snipes kind of chocolate kid, with a basketball frame- already tall, lean and ripped, with a smile for miles, a bold and compassionate personality, and a larger than life swag that could take your breath away. But I digress. One day, Derek brought his boom box and LL tape to school and busted it out during some kind of free-time in our classroom. I looked up immediately; hyper-focused on this new and unfamiliar sound. I got out of my chair and found myself bopping my plump a$$ all the way accross the classroom, over with the boys, just to get closer to the music. Now you would have thought it was all about me getting closer to D-Man huh?? Actually, no. It was never about him. I was so far in a zone- I had to have looked crazy! (And well I did. But that's a story for another time.) First, it was the beat that drew me in. But then, it was as if all I could hear was every single word, in every single line, of every single verse. When the song ended, I snapped out of my trance and immediately demanded he play it again... And again... And again, I'm sure! I fell in love with Hip-Hop that day and gained my friend, Derek. He was the first of only four people in my life, that I can remember, that has shared a special and eclectic passion for music with me. Music is powerful and dynamic- to this day, it can create a mood, elicit memories, and evoke emotions like nothing else. AND I STILL CAN'T LIVE WITHOUT MY RADIO! (iPod)
